The Opportunity:


You are an experienced and thoughtful communications professional with a sharp eye for detail, a love of language, and a deep belief in the power of African research. As Communications Officer at African Journals Online (AJOL), you will play a pivotal role in elevating African research visibility by ensuring AJOL’s voice is clear, compelling, and globally resonant.


Working closely with the Content & Communications Manager, you will be responsible for producing timely and accurate progress reports, authoring thought leadership blogs, managing AJOL’s digital presence, and helping build stronger relationships with journal partners, donors, and the wider academic ecosystem. You will also contribute to onboarding and supporting African journals on the AJOL platform, strengthening AJOL’s reputation as a trusted, responsive, and empowering partner in scholarly publishing.


This is more than a traditional communications role. It is an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to equitable access to knowledge across Africa, and to help shape the global perception of African scholarship—one word, one post, one report at a time.


The ideal candidate will possess the following skillsets


A Degree or Postgraduate Degree, ideally in the field of Information Systems, Publishing or Administration. Candidates with significant industry experience and no degree are also welcome to apply.

• Proven work experience in scholarly journal publishing and issues in the sector of research communication is a requirement.

• Proven ability to write clear, accurate and compelling statistical and narrative reports to internal and external stakeholders.

• Adequate comprehension of basic mathematics and basic accounting skills.

• Experience in written communication with external and internal stakeholders.

• Experience with maintaining a professional social media presence.

• Exceptional knowledge of collaborative and communication tools and applications.

• Excellent computer literacy. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (particularly Excel), internet-related software, Google Analytics, basic HTML and an ability to learn new computer skills.

• Previous experience in the non-profit sector in developing country contexts is advantageous.
