Salary: R372 000 - R427 000 per annum

African Journals Online (AJOL) is Africa’s foremost platform for access to peer-reviewed, African-published scholarly content. As a Non-Profit, AJOL exist to increase visibility, integrity, and global recognition of African research. AJOL support and encourage Open-Access and fee-free publication models, and provide access to a wide range of free resources to assist African researchers, authors, editors, and journals.
Since 1998, AJOL has indexed and hosted thousands of journals across disciplines. Each month, millions of articles are downloaded, with over 50% accessed by users from across Africa – amplifying the voice of local research and enhancing the global standing of African scholarship.
As part of a growing network of journal partners, AJOL is expanding its team. The organisation is seeking a Journal Support & Training Officer to join its vibrant virtual office and play a key role in strengthening editorial capacity and support services across the continent.
The Opportunity:
Reporting to AJOL’s Content and Communications Manager, you will provide timely and high-quality email support and online and in-person training to Africa-based journal editors and publishers. Additionally, you will oversee adding new journal content to the AJOL website.
This position is ideal for a thoughtful professional with a passion for African scholarship, excellent communication skills, and a collaborative approach to learning and development.
The ideal candidate will possess the following skill sets:
• A Degree or Postgraduate Degree, ideally in a field of Information Systems, Education, Publishing, Librarianship or Administration. Candidates with significant industry experience and no degree are also welcome to apply.
• Professional experience in publishing scholarly journals and a sound understanding of this work.
• The ideal candidate needs to have professional experience in training, development of training materials, and facilitating Webinars and in-person Workshops
• Experience in written communication with external and internal stakeholders, excellent spoken and written English language skills are a requirement.
• Proficient in the production of clear and comprehensive reports, internal and external correspondence, and any other training or journal support resource materials required. The incumbent must be able to communicate effectively with other organisations and individuals whose first language is not English.
• A constructive and optimistic approach, patience and respect for academics involved in journal publication, and strong drive towards support and encouragement of journal Editors and journal staff.
• Excellent computer literacy, exceptional knowledge of collaborative communication and training tools and applications and an ability to learn new computer skills. (Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (particularly Excel), internet-related software, basic HTML, familiarity with the use of online journal publishing software, particularly Open Journal Systems, is optimal.)
• Previous experience in the non-profit sector in developing country contexts is advantageous.
