African Journals Online (AJOL) is Africa’s foremost platform for access to peer-reviewed, African-published scholarly content. As a Non-Profit, AJOL exist to increase visibility, integrity, and global recognition of African research. AJOL support and encourage Open-Access and fee-free publication models, and provide access to a wide range of free resources to assist African researchers, authors, editors, and journals.
Since 1998, AJOL has indexed and hosted thousands of journals across disciplines. Each month, millions of articles are downloaded, with over 50% accessed by users from across Africa – amplifying the voice of local research and enhancing the global standing of African scholarship.
As part of a growing network of journal partners, AJOL is expanding its team. The organisation is seeking a Journal Assessment Officer to join its vibrant virtual office and play a pivotal role in supporting editorial quality and accessibility across the continent.
The Opportunity:
Working within AJOL’s Assessment Office, you will assess and re-assess partner journals and potential journal applicants using AJOL’s bespoke Journal Publishing Practices and Standards (JPPS) Framework. You’ll manage the onboarding of newly accepted journals, provide quality feedback, contribute to continuous process improvements, and deliver training to upskill editorial teams.
Reporting to the Journal Assessment Manager, this position is ideal for a thoughtful publishing professional with a passion for African scholarship, excellent communication skills, and a clear understanding of ethical editorial practice.
The ideal candidate will possess the following skillsets:
• Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science, Publishing, Communications, or a related field. Candidates with significant industry experience and no degree are also welcome to apply.
• Extensive experience in academic journal publishing, editorial work, or related areas.
• Working knowledge of online submission and publication systems.
• High proficiency in spoken and written English with external and internal stakeholders; French fluency is a strong advantage.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities in data, processes, and editorial evaluation.
• Ability to manage and report on data, including journal assessment records and trends.
• Stakeholder engagement expertise, particularly with journal editors, partners, and scholarly networks.
• Tech savvy - good knowledge of collaborative and communication tools and applications, working knowledge of Microsoft Office (particularly Excel), internet-related software, basic HTML and an ability to learn new computer skills.
